On July 26, 2012, Comunilife hosted a reception, entitled “A Celebration of Latina Smart” at El Museo del Barrio to showcase the drawings and poetry created by the girls from Life is Precious™.
Creative arts therapy is an integral part of Life is Precious™. Its purpose is to give the participants a safe and creative environment in which they can honor, discover and share their individual voices while growing and healing in the process.
The work, which is on display through November 2012, includes a short video of the girls reciting their poetry, is part of the museum’s 2012 Youth Exhibition. Frank Lopez, a poet and videographer, who worked with the girls for three months, taught them how to interpret poetry and create their own. The poetry was then incorporated into captivating, life-size portraits decorated with personal stories, pictures, and emotions. The reception was a huge success and all attendees were impressed and moved by the girl’s work.
